About me

Kaixo!

Now, what is that weird word? What language is it in? How do you even pronounce it? Kaixo (k-eye-sho) means hello in Basque, one of the oldest languages in Europe that is spoken in the north of Spain and southwest of France, right by the border. It's a language that nobody knows where it comes from and has no relation to any other language, not even Spanish or French. So now that we cleared the air about that, why Basque Prep? Who is Basque Prep?

1) My name is Ane, I am 27 and I was born in the border city of Irun, Spain. I am very proud of my origins, of being Basque and of speaking this beautiful language. I lived there till I was 18 with my awesome parents and little sister.

2) My identity is very important to me and so are my roots, but we are born with feet instead of roots because we are not meant to stay in the same place. I LOVE to travel. I've been to many European countries and made the American West mine when I did my study abroad at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.

3) I was an English Philology major at the University of the Basque Country, where I graduated from in 2013.

4) I started grad school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I just graduated from with a MA in Hispanic Linguistics Spring 2015. I'm in my 4th year of the PhD in the same department. I have been a TA of Spanish and Basque for five years and I absolutely love it, my kiddos are the best.

5) I've loved fashion since I was a kid. I have about 4 notebooks of drawings of dresses that I did when I was bored in class in 5th grade, and I was the first person to wear skinny jeans in junior high. I'm very proud of that.

6) My style could be considered as preppy-comfortable. I love striped tees, skinny jeans, ballet flats, cardigans and light scarves. I always wear silver studs or pearls and I own a gazillion statement necklaces. My mom begs me not to buy anymore white tops but you can't have enough of those, sorry mom.

7) My favorite brands are Zara, J. Crew Factory, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer and anything Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack have to offer. I'd like to own a Louis Vuitton bag but I'm not rich yet. Maybe once I graduate I will treat myself.

8) Chipotle is bae, I don't drink coffee, I don't like chocolate and I struggle with my Coke Zero addiction. My go-to comfort food is soup. Whenever I'm in school I have lunch at Panera on Fridays.

9) I love to do my own make-up and I feel naked without nail polish.

10) I have no idea about what my future will be like AT ALL, but if I end up living in the US I want to live in Chicago. I fall in love with that city every time I'm there.
